The town of Ajax was named after the British light cruiser HMS Ajax and if you walk around the streets you will read the names of the ship's crew. Harwood Ave. the main street running north/south is named after Commodore Henry Harwood. Today, Ajax is Ajax Real estate is identified by the Toronto Real Estate Board as E14. Situated aproximately 25 kilometers east of Toronto on the shores of Lake Ontario, Ajax is bordered by the City of Pickering to the West and the Town of Whitby to the East. Ajax is also home to the Rouge Valley East Hospital, formerly known as the Ajax-Pickering Hospital. The town was born in 1941 when a Defence Industries Limited shell plant was constructed and a townsite grew around the plant. Thus began a vast shell filling plant which before 1945 had: filled 40 million shells; employed over 9,000 people at peak production; boasted of its own water and sewage treatment plants; a school population of over 600; 30 miles of railroad and 30 miles of roads. The entire D.I.L. plant site included some 2,985 acres. People came from all over Canada to work at D.I.L. The plant eventually closed after the war, but the town survived. Check out the fabulous waterfront!Ajax takes great pride in its Lake Ontario waterfront, which is the longest undeveloped waterfront in the Toronto area. It is accessible to the public, with bridges spanning creeks, natural and maintained areas, and lots of walking/biking pathways. The waterfront access contributes significantly to appeal of Ajax real estatel. With many kilometres of walking and bike trails along with park land, the waterfront is well used. At the foot of Harwood Ave. S. you will find Harwood Point Historical Gardens, dedicated to the HMS Ajax, the Royal Navy ship after which the Town was named The Gardens are a great place to learn some of our Towns history and enjoy the lakefront. Continue west along the lakefront to find Rotary Park, site of many activities such as Music in the Park in the summer, Canada Day celebrations, and many other special activities. Rotary Park includes a playground and snack bar and it is also the entry point to a long-span bridge across Duffins Marsh where it enters the lake. Across the bridge, the pathway continues into the City of Pickering.
